Why She’s Awesome

The RCA grad is young, ambitious and continually experimenting with her craft. From lighting to new ways to display flowers, Jo challenges the perception of ceramics being a deadly serious endeavor, adding a touch of refreshing humour and humanity to her work.

Her signature pieces often show the process of wheel-thrown ceramics in their design — the cups and pendants, for instance have lovely grooves, made by Jo’s fingers as the clay rotates on the pottery wheel.

The Clerkenwell Connection

Jo Davies is a member of the Craft Central network of designer-makers, and I first encountered her work at the Exhibition of Emerging Talent in March 2010.

Jo Davies Speak Vases
Speak Vases, while drying and the finished product. The series comes with one, two or three openings, and in a black or white glaze.

My top picks:

From bottom left, clockwise: Egg hoops, £9 each. Shift bowl, £95. Flare vase set in black, £85. All wheel-thrown porcelain.

Behind the Scenes

We paid a visit to Jo’s Stoke Newington garden studio earlier this year. Read the blog post to see where she does her work!

Hi Jo, I love your ceramics. They are full of feeling – what you get from making things with your own hands. Hope to buy one of your pieces one day.

    All the best, Ash
